Welcome to the Town of Buchans, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada

Located near the shores of majestic Red Indian Lake, Central Newfoundland

Buchans is located in the interior of Central Newfoundland on the northwest shore of beautiful Red Indian Lake, home of the Beothuk. The community is home to a fully staffed medical centre and a modern K-12 school.

The community has its roots in the mining sector and for much of the last century the town was the site of one of the richest base metal mines in North America. Even today, mining continues to play a key role in the life of the community with the ongoing operations of Barite Mud Services which supplies a top quality drilling mud to Newfoundland’s offshore oil producers. At the height of its mining glory the residents thrilled to the exploits of their beloved Buchans Miners senior hockey team. Both the glory days of mining and of sports are celebrated in the local community museum, open every summer.

Buchans is a natural wonderland with pristine lakes teeming with trout and vast wilderness areas supporting trophy moose, woodland caribou, and black bear. World class skidooing and ATV opportunities at your back door; beautiful cross country ski trails combined with breathtaking scenery all around make Buchans a naturalist’s dream. The 600 residents of Buchans are proud of their community and welcome all new residents and visitors with a warm handshake. Our low cost of living, schools, emergency services and amenities make

Buchans an excellent place to call home or visit. Come and experience the beauty of our province’s interior and see what nature has to offer!
