Museum

Formally the Doctor’s house, the house has been turned into a museum showing the history of Buchans complete with a mining experience.

Mudhole

Take a quick hike down to the where the Buchans River runs between the rocks and forms pools for you to enjoy a refreshing dip or catch a little sun. Wear swimming shoes and bring your towel. Please take out what you bring in, as this area is not staffed, to help keep it tidy and deter the wildlife.

Hiking Trails and Blueberries

Buchans has many loops to do. You can walk in to the old mine sites, MacLean’s, Rothermere, Oriental, or hike up ski hill and pick enough blueberries in season to fill your freezer.

Red Indian Lake

The second largest fresh body of water in Newfoundland. At the landing, enjoy swimming, beach combing, boating, fishing or take in the natural beauty of this historic area. Home of the Beothuk Indians and the Indian Point Beothuk interpretation Site. This is an unsupervised lake.

Hunting and Fishing

Central Newfoundland is ideal for hunting and fishing and Buchans is located in the heart of the action. There are two major outfitters located within the area who provide guided fishing, hunting and snowmobiling tours:

With some of the best trails and weather the province has to offer, Buchans won’t disappoint your desire for outdoor adventure.

Mary March Wilderness Park

The park is located right on the shoreline of Newfoundland’s 2nd largest lake, the historic Red Indian Lake, we promote the natural beauty and wilderness areas in the park and areas nearby attraction. The park has access to the ATV Trail System. Seeing is believing! There are 9.5km of hiking trails in the park including a nature walk trail along the lake shore where the Beothuk lived, hunted, fished and enjoyed nature.

Indian Point Beothuk Interpretation Site

Only 30 minutes away, the Indian Point Beothuk Interpretation Site is in the area where Mary March was captured and later returned for burial. New interpretation boards tell the story of the Beothuk and the artifacts that were found on this site. Visit the reconstructed mamateek and smoke house.
